51 letters sent by Emil Nolde and/or his wife Ada Nolde to the couple Alfred and Johanna Heuer. Also included are 9 separate additional items and 2 items accompanying individual letters. Subjects covered in the letters include: publications on and by Nolde; details of his illness in 1936; the exhibition Degenerate Art and Nolde's paintings in this exhibition; and the famous 1939 auction of "degenerate art," Paintings and sculptures by modern masters from German museums, at the Galerie Fischer in Lucerne. Among the additional items are copies of official documents of the Reichskammer für Bildende Kunst in which Nolde receives the formal ban and the Nazis list artwork confiscated; a portrait photograph; some postal receipts; printed invitation cards for birthday celebrations; and the death announcement of his wife Ada.
